This lecture, “Elemental Ingestions and Secret Wars” has been postponed until the Fall 2020 semester, date TBA.


Gabrielle Hecht is the Frank Stanton Foundation Professor of Nuclear Security at Stanford University, where she is also Professor of History, and Professor (by courtesy) of Anthropology. She is the author of two award-winning books: Being Nuclear: Africans and the Global Uranium Tradeand The Radiance of France: Nuclear Power and National Identity After WW2. Her current work explores radioactive residues, toxic waste, air pollution, and African Anthropocenes. These interests are coalescing into a series of essays, provisionally titled Residual Governance: Tales from an Inside-Out Earth. The first of these have appeared in Cultural Anthropology, AeonSomatosphere, and the LA Review of Books.
